3-Finger Rule for Sunscreen
How to dose and apply it
the right way
The 3-finger rule helps you quickly apply the right amount of sunscreen without measuring. You draw three longer lines of sunscreen across your index, middle and ring fingers. For most textures, that amount covers the face plus neck and gets you closer to the recommended application amount of around 2 mg per cm² of skin.
How exactly does the 3-finger rule work?
Draw three continuous lines of sunscreen across your index, middle and ring fingers. Then spread the cream over your face, ears and neck, ideally in two thin layers: apply the first layer, let it settle briefly, then apply the rest. This gives more even coverage and reduces gaps.
- 3-finger rule: In practice, this works well for face plus neck, especially with light gels, fluids and K-Beauty textures.
- 2-finger rule: Often enough for the face alone or for very rich, covering creams.
- Texture note: More fluid products spread further and feel lighter, but often still need the full 3-finger amount.
- Fine-tuning: Smaller faces may need a little less, larger faces a little more. What matters is a visible, even layer you can feel across the skin.

How much sunscreen do you need for your whole body?
For the body, use simple rule-of-thumb amounts: around 30 to 40 ml for one full-body application on an adult. That is roughly a shot glass. In practice, a 200 ml bottle only lasts for a few proper full-body applications if you apply it consistently and generously.
- Face and neck: 2 to 3 finger lengths
- Each arm: about 1 teaspoon
- Each leg: about 2 teaspoons
- Front and back of torso: about 1 tablespoon each
Do not forget exposed areas: ears, back of neck, hairline or parting, backs of hands and tops of feet.
Application: order, timing and reapplying
- Order: In the morning, apply it as the last skincare step, before makeup.
- Timing: Chemical or organic filters should ideally be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure. Mineral filters protect immediately, but also benefit from a short settling time.
- Reapplying: Every 2 hours, and always after swimming, heavy sweating, or friction from a towel, hat or mask.

Choosing SPF: 30 or 50?
SPF 30 filters roughly 97 percent of UVB radiation, while SPF 50 filters around 98 percent. In real life, most people apply too little. That is why SPF 50 is often the safer choice, especially for fair skin, intense sun or sensitive skin. Also look for broad-spectrum UVA protection, shown by PA ratings or the UVA circle on EU products. More basics here: The difference between UVA and UVB in sun protection.
For everyday use, SPF 30 to 50 makes sense. In strong sun, at the beach, in the mountains, or if you tend to apply too little, choose SPF 50.
For sensitive skin, gentle fragrance-free formulas are worth considering.

Cream, gel, stick, spray: how to measure correctly with the 3-finger rule
- Tube or pump: Learn how many pumps roughly equal three finger lengths. Pump output varies by brand.
- Spray: Spray from close range onto the skin until you see an even sheen, then rub it in and repeat. Do not spray into the air.
- Stick: Swipe several times over each area, then spread with clean hands so no gaps are left behind.

FAQ about the 3-finger rule
What is the 3-finger rule for sunscreen?
You dose sunscreen by drawing three lines across your index, middle and ring fingers. With many products, that amount covers the face plus neck and helps you apply enough product without using a measuring tool.
How many fingers of sunscreen do you need?
For the face alone, 2 fingers are often enough; for face plus neck, 3 fingers is a practical guide. What matters most is creating an even, visible layer and applying it without gaps.
Why not SPF 50?
There is no reason to avoid SPF 50. Because people often apply too little, SPF 50 is often the more practical choice, especially in intense sun or for sensitive skin.
In what order do you apply sunscreen?
As the last step of your morning routine after serum and cream, before makeup. Then reapply regularly, especially after water, sweat or friction.
