7-Step Korean Skincare Routine
Your practical guide
for clearer, healthier skin
Want plump, clear skin without guesswork? The 7-step Korean skincare routine gives you a proven order that builds hydration, uses actives efficiently, and protects your skin barrier. Here you’ll find the exact order, short step-by-step explanations, the 7-skin method in context, and tips for adapting the routine to your skin type and the season.
The right order: your 7 steps at a glance
- 1. Oil cleanser - dissolve makeup, SPF, and sebum
- 2. Water-based cleanser - deep yet gentle cleansing
- 3. Exfoliant - renew skin gently
- 4. Toner - balance pH and hydrate
- 5. Essence or serum - targeted active ingredients
- 6. Moisturizer - seal in hydration
- 7. Sunscreen in the morning - daily UV protection
How to do the 7 steps
1. Oil cleanser
Massage 1-2 pumps of an oil or balm cleanser onto dry skin to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. Emulsify with a little water, then rinse thoroughly. The result: less friction, no tight feeling, and a clean base for the next steps. For a deeper look at the first cleansing duo, read Double cleansing: the Korean method.
2. Water-based cleanser
Use a mild gel or foam cleanser on damp skin to remove sweat and leftover impurities. Work it in gently for 30-60 seconds and rinse. Look for pH-friendly formulas so your barrier stays intact.
3. Exfoliant
Use chemical exfoliants 1-3 times per week: AHA for dull, dry areas, BHA for blemishes and clogged pores, and PHA for very sensitive skin. Start low, watch how your skin responds, and avoid mechanical scrubbing if you’re reactive. If you want to integrate acids safely, see AHA & BHA: gentle exfoliation.
4. Toner
A hydrating toner balances pH and creates your moisture base. Apply it with your hands and pat it in gently. Look for calming humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or betaine, plus balancing botanicals like green tea.
5. Essence or serum
Essences are lightweight and primarily hydrating, while serums deliver concentrated actives. Choose based on your skin goal: niacinamide for visible pores and oil balance, vitamin C for glow, centella for soothing, snail for elasticity. Not sure which to pick? Then Ampoule vs. serum - what’s the difference? helps. Layer from thin to thick and wait 30-60 seconds between steps. For smarter combinations, read Layering in Korean skincare.
6. Moisturizer
Lock in hydration with a cream that suits your skin. Lightweight gel creams work well for oily skin, while richer textures with ceramides and squalane are better for dryness. A small amount is enough; if you get shiny, use less next time.
7. Sunscreen
Every morning, as the last step: use the 2-finger rule for face and neck. Lightweight gels or milk textures absorb quickly and sit well under makeup. SPF helps prevent hyperpigmentation, premature aging, and barrier damage - non-negotiable. Why this step has to be daily is explained in Sunscreen: the most important step.
What it is and when it makes sense
The 7-skin method comes from Korea and means applying multiple thin layers of a hydrating toner - not seven different products, but up to seven layers of toner. The goal is maximum layer-by-layer hydration without heaviness, which can work especially well for dehydrated skin, but also for oily skin.
Here’s how to do it: after cleansing, pour a small amount of toner into your hands, pat it in, wait 20-40 seconds until the skin no longer looks wet and shiny, then repeat. Three layers are ideal for beginners, up to seven if needed. Choose alcohol-free, lightweight toners with humectants and soothing extracts. If your skin is very reactive, stay with 1-3 layers. It works especially well in the evening, 1-3 times per week, or as a hydration boost before special occasions. If your skin looks plump and doesn’t feel tight, you can choose a lighter cream afterward - or sometimes skip it entirely if your skin is oily.
Adapt it to your skin type and the season
- Oily skin: Very lightweight gel cleansers, use salicylic-acid toners less often, watery essences, gel cream, mattifying lightweight SPF textures.
- Dry skin: Gentle cleansers, PHA or very mild AHA, toner with hyaluronic acid and panthenol, a richer cream with ceramides, and occlusive finishers in winter.
- Sensitive skin: Low-fragrance, alcohol-free, minimal exfoliation, centella and madecassoside, slow layering, and patch testing.
- Combination skin: Work by zone - lighter products on the T-zone, more moisture on the cheeks. Use spot serums selectively.
