Heartleaf:
the ingredient
taking over TikTok

It's been on your For You page. It's in half the Anua lineup. And unlike most viral skincare moments, the science actually holds up. Here's what heartleaf is, what it does, and why sensitive skin in particular should pay attention.

What is heartleaf, exactly?

Heartleaf is the common name for Houttuynia cordata, a plant native to Southeast and East Asia that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. In Korea it's known as eoseongcho, and in Chinese medicine it has a long history as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial herb. What K-beauty did was take that traditional knowledge and run it through modern dermatological research — and the results have been consistently impressive.

The plant is rich in quercetin, a flavonoid with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, alongside decanoyl acetaldehyde, which gives heartleaf its natural antibacterial action. It also contains minerals and chlorogenic acid, which supports skin brightening. All of this makes it unusually versatile: it calms, it protects, it gently clarifies, and it doesn't disrupt the skin barrier in the process.

That last point is what separates it from a lot of other actives. Ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or even high-percentage niacinamide can cause irritation in sensitive skin. Heartleaf works with the skin's natural systems rather than against them, which is why it's become the go-to ingredient for anyone whose skin tends to react badly to everything else.

What it actually does to your skin

Heartleaf works across four areas simultaneously, which is part of why it has such a devoted following. Most soothing ingredients do one thing well. Heartleaf does several.

Benefit 01

Anti-inflammatory

Quercetin and other flavonoids in heartleaf suppress the inflammatory response in skin cells. This means visible redness calms down, and the cycle of inflammation that turns a minor irritation into a full flare-up is interrupted earlier.

Benefit 02

Antibacterial

Decanoyl acetaldehyde targets acne-causing bacteria without disturbing the broader skin microbiome. It's a more precise approach than broad-spectrum antibacterials, which is why heartleaf products tend not to cause the microbiome disruption that some acne treatments do.

Benefit 03

Antioxidant protection

Heartleaf is rich in chlorogenic acid and quercetin, both of which neutralize free radicals from UV exposure and pollution. This makes it a useful daytime ingredient as well as a soothing evening one — it's protecting while it calms.

Benefit 04

Barrier support

Unlike many actives that address a problem by stripping or chemically altering the skin, heartleaf leaves the barrier intact and actually supports it. It hydrates, it reduces transepidermal water loss, and it leaves skin less reactive over time with consistent use.

"It doesn't fight your skin to fix it. That's what makes heartleaf different from almost everything else in the acne and sensitivity space."

The skin types that respond best

Heartleaf is one of the few ingredients with genuine cross-skin-type appeal. It's especially well-suited to sensitive and reactive skin, but the antibacterial and antioxidant properties make it useful for oily and acne-prone skin too. The only skin type that might not get much out of it is very dry, non-reactive skin that primarily needs lipid replenishment rather than calming — though even then, it's unlikely to cause harm.

Heartleaf works especially well if…

  • Your skin reacts to most products with redness or stinging
  • You have acne-prone skin that's also sensitive or dehydrated
  • You're dealing with post-acne redness that lingers long after the spot is gone
  • You have rosacea or rosacea-like flushing
  • Your barrier is compromised from overuse of actives or harsh treatments
  • You want an ingredient that works during the day without sun-sensitivity concerns
  • You're building a routine from scratch and want a forgiving, low-risk starting point

What to pair it with

  • Hyaluronic acid — amplifies the hydrating effect without any conflict
  • Niacinamide — a classic pairing for brightening and pore-minimizing on top of the calming base
  • Centella asiatica — both are barrier-supporting and soothing; they work in the same direction
  • BHA (salicylic acid) — heartleaf can offset some of the irritation potential of BHA in oily or acne-prone skin
  • SPF — always, and heartleaf's antioxidant content makes it a good SPF companion

How one brand made heartleaf famous

Anua didn't discover heartleaf, but they did more than anyone else to make it mainstream. Their Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner — formulated with 77% heartleaf extract as the primary ingredient — became one of the most viral K-beauty products of the last few years, with millions of views across TikTok and YouTube from people documenting what it did to their reactive, acne-prone skin.

What made it stand out was the concentration. Most products that use heartleaf include it as a minor supporting ingredient. Anua built their entire formula around it, which means you're getting a meaningful therapeutic dose rather than a trace amount added for marketing purposes. That difference shows up in real-world results, and it's why the reviews tend to be so consistent: people with sensitive skin who've tried everything else often find that a high-concentration heartleaf product is the first thing that actually works without making things worse.

The line has since expanded well beyond that first toner, and the same principle applies across all of it: high heartleaf concentration, minimal irritants, and formulas built around the ingredient rather than around it.
