Skincare Order:
Your routine
step by step
Too many products, too little clarity? With the right skincare order, you get the maximum out of your routine. Whether you prefer a minimalist facial routine or a K-beauty-inspired routine with multiple layers, the key is to go from watery to oily and from thin to thick.
How to build the right order
Too many products, too little clarity? With the right skincare order, you get the most out of your routine. Whether you prefer a minimalist facial care routine or a K-beauty-inspired routine with several layers, what matters is the order from watery to oily and from thin to thick. A good framework is the J-Beauty approach Cleanse–Hydrate–Protect — more on that in the three steps of Japanese skincare. In the morning, your skincare routine ends with sunscreen; in the evening, the focus is on thorough cleansing and recovery. At NoticeMe, you’ll find everything you need for that — from oil and gel cleansers to toner, essence and serums, all the way to moisturizers and SPF.

The right order step by step
1. Cleansing
In the morning, lukewarm water or a very gentle cleanser is often enough for dry or sensitive skin. In the evening, double cleansing is ideal: first an oil cleanser to dissolve makeup, SPF and sebum, then a water-based cleanser for sweat and leftover impurities. Choose textures that suit your skin type and avoid hot water. You can find suitable oil-based cleansers with us.
2. Exfoliation
Use it 2–3 evenings per week after cleansing. Chemical exfoliants are usually gentler and more effective than physical scrubs: AHA for dull, dry skin, BHA/salicylic acid for blemishes and clogged pores, and PHA for very sensitive skin. Don’t combine them with other strong actives on the same evening, and always follow with hydration.
3. Toner or essence
After cleansing, a hydrating toner or essence helps moisturize the skin and improve the absorption of the products that follow. Thin, watery formulas come first. The 7-skin method (several thin layers of toner) can give dry skin extra hydration. A practical overview is available in our toner collection. For background on the term in a J-Beauty context, see what “lotion” (toner) means in Japan.
4. Serum
This is where targeted actives come in: vitamin C in the morning for glow and antioxidants, niacinamide for balancing care, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and retinoids in the evening for renewal. If you use multiple serums, the rule is: thin to thick, water-based before oil-based, and give each serum a moment to absorb.
5. Eye cream
Apply a lightweight eye treatment before your face cream. Pat it in gently rather than rubbing. Typical ingredients include peptides, caffeine, ceramides or retinal for nighttime use.
6. Where masks fit in your routine
For mask order in skincare: use sheet masks after toner and before serum or moisturizer. Cleansing clay masks or exfoliating masks go directly after cleansing. Use masks 1–3 times per week depending on your skin’s needs.
7. Moisturizer
Your moisturizer strengthens the skin barrier and seals in the previous layers. Use lighter gel creams for oily skin and richer formulas for dry skin. In the evening, a more occlusive night treatment can make sense. Here you’ll find suitable moisturizers.
8. Sunscreen and makeup
In the morning, sunscreen is the last skincare step before makeup. Use at least SPF 30, ideally SPF 50, in a sufficient amount and reapply when needed. Makeup comes after sunscreen. That’s how the sunscreen-makeup order works best.
Rules for the right order
- Thin to thick: Watery textures first, oily and richer products last.
- Water before oil: Water-based serums or toners come before oily serums, face oils and rich creams.
- Mind the pH: Acid exfoliants always go after cleansing and before hydrating layers. Depending on the formula, vitamin C usually comes early in the routine.
- Absorption time: Give each layer 30–60 seconds before applying the next one.
- Adapt to your skin type: A minimalist routine or more steps — both can work. Tolerance and consistency matter most.
- Women and men: The order of facial skincare is the same for everyone — only product choice may vary.
Combine actives smartly
Choose a few targeted actives instead of doing too much at once. That way, you avoid irritation and get more consistent results from your routine.
- Hydration: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol and ectoin hydrate and soothe — ideal directly after toner.
- Barrier support: Ceramides, squalane and centella asiatica work well under or inside your moisturizer step.
- Clearer skin: Niacinamide and salicylic acid help with blemishes; salicylic acid in the evening, niacinamide more flexibly.
- Glow and protection: Vitamin C in the morning under SPF for antioxidant protection and a more even look.
- Renewal: Retinoids/retinal in the evening, introduced slowly, and not combined with AHA/BHA on the same night.
Do’s & don’ts of your routine
- Do: Wash your hands, pat your face dry gently, distribute products evenly and include your neck.
- Do: Exfoliate 1–3 times weekly, not daily, and always finish with hydration.
- Do: Wear SPF every day, even in winter and on cloudy days, and use enough.
- Don't: Combine too many strong actives — that increases the risk of irritation.
- Don't: Use physical scrubs with pressure on sensitive skin.
- Don't: Apply oil before watery products have absorbed — that can block absorption.
FAQ about skincare order
In what order should I use skincare products?
Basic rule: cleanser - toner/essence - serum - eye cream - moisturizer - SPF in the morning, with an optional mask in the evening. Always go from thin to thick and water-based before oil-based.
What is the 7-skin rule in skincare?
The 7-skin method means applying a light, hydrating toner 3 to 7 times in thin layers to maximize moisture — especially popular for dry skin.
Which skincare ingredients should not be combined?
Do not combine retinoids with AHA/BHA on the same evening. Avoid using multiple acids at once. With active acne, separate benzoyl peroxide and retinoids by time of use.
What order should serums go in?
Use watery serums first, then oilier or more viscous ones. Start with the most important active, let it absorb briefly, and layer no more than 2–3 serums per routine.
SPF or makeup first?
Sunscreen is the last skincare step in the morning, and makeup comes after. Wait 2–3 minutes so the SPF can set.
